The Magic of Magic Cookie Bars

My darling son has a couple of play hammers that he has recently decided needed to be used on just about everything...from the mirrored closet doors to our stainless steel refrigerator door.

I then had an idea that would put his ceaseless energy to good use, and teach him in the process. I needed to bake a treat for the teenage boys that visit weekly, and Christian needed to get out his hammering needs. The antidote? Magic Cookie Bars.

The ingredient list is very simple, and Christian really only had one job: use his hammer to crush graham crackers in a plastic baggie. That kept him busy while I took care of the other steps.

The result was pure deliciousness, and one of my favorite quick treats. I satisfied my sweet tooth, took care of our guests' need for a treat, and allowed Christian to learn in the kitchen. One lesson I wasn't counting on him learning: climb one step down at a time on the step stool. (He failed to do so and fell flat on his face.) Life lessons aren't always easily learned!

Ingredients....so simple!

Magic Cookie Bars Recipe:

1/2 cup margarine

1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs

1 (14 oz) can Sweetened Condensed Milk

2 cups (12 oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 1/3 cups flaked coconut

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put butter in a 13x9 inch baking pan and melt in the oven.

2. Have your 2 year old prepare / crush graham cracker crumbs while butter melts

3. Sprinkle crumbs over butter; pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over graham cracker crumbs. Top with remaining ingredients; press down firmly with fork. (*Do note that the pan will be hot, so toddler should not be part of these steps*)

4. Bake 25 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool. Chill, if desired. Cut into bars. Eat and enjoy the yummyness!

**You can also add nuts on top, or replace chocolate chips / coconut with other varieties of chips (white chocolate, butterscotch, milk chocolate, rainbow candy chips, etc.) Get creative!**
