A Pile

I despise "piles".  You know what I'm talking about.  Those various areas in and around the kitchen / office / house where things are thrown to rest "in the interim".  Those piles that rest longer than "in the interim", as they continue to collect miscellaneous, homeless objects.  Those piles that eventually grow into a giant mess-monster that could eat a small child and cause grown men to cry.

Filing is a pile that I'm quite content to ignore...until hubby is looking for the XYZ receipt.  As I go through the file pile, I inevitably think to myself "Why, Jolene, why?!  It takes just a minute or two to file as you go, rather than an hour or two (or day or two) when it gets this far."

Isn't this a lesson that is relevant across the board?  The "pile" of excess weight, for example.  Gaining a pound here, a pound there, while you enthusiastically choose to ignore it.  That is, of course, until you are 50 lbs heavier and leave a giant crater in your favorite place on the couch.  Perhaps your "pile" is oral hygiene.  You skip brushing / flossing here, there, everywhere, until you cannot eat because your rotten teeth fell out of your head.  The last time I checked, dentures cost a lot more than a toothbrush.  I'm just saying.

It is so easy to ignore things, to slack, to get lazy.  Is it really though?  Would you rather spend a minute making the right decision today, or months of correcting your laziness later?

I'm preaching to the choir here, so don't think I'm saying I'm' Missy Got-it-all-Together Britches'.  I'm still correcting bad eating habits, one day at a time.  I'm still working at living on a squeaky tight budget.  I'm still working on pretty much EVERYTHING.  But the point is, I'm working at it.  One. Moment. At. A. Time.

So...do you have a pile?
