A Moment within a Moment

Children in the midst of an afternoon slumber, I slipped out for an adventure, armed only with my camera.
I sought the new Spring blossoms.  The buds of new life.  The beauty in the dead.

I found a hummingbird.  A hummingbird with which I could relate.

If you weren't looking for the sweet little nest, you'd never see it.
I failed to see her as I explored with my lens.  I was unsuspecting, seeking beauty.  She saw me as a threat, and came after me with zeal, fervor, relentlessness.  She retreated and watched me from afar.  I discovered her nest, and it all made sense.  If I had taken her precious nest, what would she have done?  Fought to death?  I'm so much larger than her, what could she do, really?
She's giving me the stink eye here...do you see it?
Ultimately, I shook off the shock, screams and fear.  I backed away and allowed her to resume her nesting duties.

Is this not much unlike moments out of our control, when God comes to our nest?  So often we fight tooth and nail, give the stink eye and try to intimidate; our attempt to control.  Oh, how we must amuse Him.  Or, is it annoy?
I now see that I must protect momma and her baby yet to be.  I have little devils that peruse the yard in a destructive fashion and I must keep them from harming such precious innocence.

Though momma-hummingbird knows not, she has a strong ally in me.  I can protect her from evils she cannot understand.  And still, The Giver of Life protects even more.  Even more complete.

Let us recognize our Great Ally and rest in His care today.
