A Historical Day - Cliffnote Version

I'd like to take a moment to get slightly political, today.  If you know me, you'd know politics are a passion of mine, but I generally do not comment politically on my blog for a number of reasons.  As hubby said recently, "You aren't allowed to get into politics professionally as long as I am in the pastorate; there needs to be a separation between church and state."  ;-)

However, today was a momentous day (being compared to the day the Berlin Wall fell).  Did you see the news?  Hosni Mubarek...the dictator of the republic of Egypt for more than 30 years has stepped down.  He's done so after 18 days of unprecedented protests and the outcry of the public for his resignation.  On a larger scale, he's ended a 6000 year political system in Egypt; one of dictatorship.  Why is this important to us?  We are the U.S.A.  What do we care about Egypt; a country of suppressed and impoverished peoples?

El Baradei, the group that is being credited for the protests, is strongly anti-Israel.  They are also pro-Muslim Brotherhood.  "Who cares?"  WE should care.  An anti-Israel sentiment is the first clue that a regime is also anti-Western world.  The Western world encompasses Europe, the US, Canada and South America.  The Western world is pro-capitalism, pro-democracy, pro-liberty.  It is also strongly Christian based.  And therein lies the problem.

Anti-Israel groups, especially the ones in question now, are also pro-jihad.  Remember 9/11?  That was the beginning of a jihad on our soil.  Every country ruled with an anti-Israel regime is, in essence, anti-West.

And so, I say all this not to make it difficult for you to find sleep tonight.  I say this because no matter what, GOD IS IN CONTROL.  When the Israelites have been slaughtered in the past, God was in control.  When our country was attacked 10 years ago, God was in control.  And no matter what is still to come, both personally and politically, God is in control.  Find comfort, hope and joy in that.

*There is much more to all this complex situation.  I did not speak of the dynamic of a dictator and the people uprising against him, in a desire for a democracy.  I did not speak of the role our government played (which can be argued as inappropriate).  Read up on it all.  Get informed and form your own opinion.  Freedom of press and freedom of speech are amazing gifts.*
